Take a journey into the world of visuals! There's one thing to know how to use your camera, but how do you create a visually appealing photograph? You have the technical tools, now let's put them to work to enhance your creative eye. This course focuses on mastering the composition and design of your images.

You'll learn all about the rules of composition, when to apply them, when to consider them, and crucially, when to break them to develop your own signature style.

What You Will Master:

  • Framing and Design: Quickly and efficiently enhance framing, composition, and overall image design.
  • Visual Elements: Master the visual aspects of photography, including color theory, pattern, texture, perspective, contrast, balance, and directional lighting.
  • Creative Potential: Review famous photographers' work and tons of image critiques that will enrich and unleash your creative potential.
  • The Photo Series: You'll be assigned to photograph a series that you are welcome to showcase at the end of the course (optional).

Course Structure:

Sessions will include plenty of shooting assignments, in-class practice and experimentation, and group critiques of your own work.

Requirements & Availability
Requirements: ANY Camera (DSLR, Mirrorless, Point and Shoot, or Phone). No prior shooting knowledge is strictly required, but we highly recommend knowing the basics of your camera or taking a Beginner's camera course in parallel.

🏙️ STREET & TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP: Landscape, Cityscape, & On-Location Skills.

Creative Photography Class

Enhance your travel photos and capture any scene with confidence and creativity! This workshop is an essential mix of Landscape, Cityscape, and Street Photography, making it ideal for the frequent traveler, the photojournalist, and the photographer who loves shooting anywhere, everywhere.

This intensive course is mostly conducted outdoors and focuses on honing compositional and technical skills specific to dynamic, real-world environments. You'll be fully prepared for your next outdoor adventure, from capturing expressive street portraits to stunning natural landscapes.

What You Will Master:

  • Location Composition: Learn savvy techniques that will turn your landscape and cityscape images into outstanding ones, focusing on perspective, lighting, and specialized composition rules for outdoor scenes.
  • Street & Candid Techniques: Capture scenes and moments with confidence, including environmental portraiture and the ethics of shooting in public spaces.
  • Real-Time Practice: Experienced instructors guide you through various outdoor shooting scenarios (High Line, Union Square, Central Park, etc.) with immediate review of the work photographed during class.
  • Light Manipulation: The ins and outs of manipulating natural and urban light for impactful location photos.
Requirements & Availability
Requirements: Any camera (DSLRs to Phone cameras). Note: This course will not review the fundamentals of camera functions and exposure; students are expected to know how to manage their cameras (auto or manual mode recommended).
Assumed Knowledge: Digital Photography I or equivalent level is recommended.
Note: Classes take place mainly outdoors. Please be prepared for weather conditions.

📰 PHOTOJOURNALISM & DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY: Visual Narrative.

Street Photography Class

Building on the basics of street photography, this course guides you into the powerful world of documentary and photojournalism. This course is highly recommended for those who want to take their storytelling skills to the next level and develop their own unique voice and point of view.

What You Will Master:

  • Narrative Techniques: Learn various documentary and journalism techniques through weekly photo assignments and in-class group critiques.
  • Master Analysis: Introduction to the work of famous documentary photographers to inspire and guide your own vision.
  • Long-Form Project: Work on a personal photo documentary body of work of your own choice, covering the entire process from conception of an idea and subject analysis to the final layout of a compelling photo series.
  • Showcase: Students will have the opportunity to showcase their best photographs at a PhotoManhattan's exhibit (optional).
Requirements & Availability
Requirements: Any digital camera. Manual options are highly recommended for technical control.
Level of Knowledge Assumed: Basic camera knowledge is necessary. This course does not cover the fundamentals of camera settings, menus, or exposure.
Available Versions: Available in 5 sessions (2-hour classes) or 3 sessions (3:15-minute classes).
