Photography in Automatic Mode

This course is our most simplified version of Introductory Photography for those of you looking to learn tricks and tips using your camera strickly in Automatic and Semi-Automatic modes. $219. (View Dates)

Students will learn tricks and tips necessary to improve their travel, candid, landscape or action shots. Course will cover: Framing, Lighting, Exposure control, Focus, and basic special effect techniques.

Requirements: Point and Shoot or SLR digital camera.
For the first class: bring your digital camera, its batteries, camera's manual (if at hand).

Note, if you are looking to learn all the ins and outs of your camera, including Manual Mode or if you use a film camera, please refer to our "Introduction to Photography" course.

Introduction to Photography

This course is a complete training on all the basic and intermediate photography techniques and processes: Camera settings, Exposure control, Photo-Composition, Focus control, Basic Lighting, Portraiture and Project development. This course is for both digital or film cameras. We offer separate processing courses both for film (Darkroom) and digital (Digital Darkroom). (View dates)

Camera can also be either SLR or Point and shoot, however, we highly recommend SLRs as they have a greater range of options. Introduction to Photography 9 - Weeks

Introduction to Photography 5 - Weeks
This course is an intensive version of our 9-session Introduction to Photography course and is offered Twice Weekly or Once weekly. It does not include a photography exhibition. $305. (View Dates)

Introduction to Photography 3 - Weeks
This course is the most intensive introductory training we offer: 3 Days, 4-1/2 hours each session. $305. (View dates)

Students will learn, understand and apply photographic techniques instantly through class exercises that will be shot, printed and reviewed in class. Instant digital printing will be available at PhotoManhattan. Photos shot with film cameras will be printed as assignments and brought to the next class. This course's first class will provide students with the background necessary to take our Digital photography Darkroom class.

Estimated extra expenses: Two films and its development and additional printing fees for both classes: $10.

Photoshop I

This course is designed for those of you who are looking to learn image retouching and fine-tuning using Photoshop CS3. $219. (View Dates)

Course covers: Histogram, Contrast & Color adjustment using Levels, Cropping, Sharpening, Noise control, and Saving settings for various outputs. Requirements: 1- Basic understanding of your digital camera's settings and options. 2- Access to Photoshop CS or Photoshop 7. Other versions are accepted but not recommended. 3- Efficiency to operate a Mac or Windows computer; students will be expected to be able to comfortably browse around a computer in order to follow up with the class. Note, Each student will be provided with a Mac work station. differences between Mac and Windows will be briefly explained on the first class. If you wish to bring your own laptop (Mac only), you are welcome; however, note that you'll be asked to adjust some of your computer settings for use in class. Darkroom

This course is designed for beginners wishing to learn basic and advanced darkroom techniques.

Course covers: Film development, 8x10 printing, special film processing techniques, contrast control, and introduction to 11 x 14 printing. For the first class please bring 8X10 Black & White RC photo paper and one Black and White negative (if any). Available as a private classes only. Click here to sign up.

Photography II

The purpose of this course is to fully train students advanced photo techniques to enable them to expand their creativity and express their own ideas, convictions and emotions through photography.(View dates)

Through the study of different techniques: composition, lighting, and special effects such as photomontage and surrealism, students will develop a better understanding of how different techniques can be used to manipulate and change the meaning of a given image. A weekly study of various famous photographers & historical movements in portraiture, documentary, illustration, and abstract photography, will strongly develop the students' sense of creativity and ability for "representation". Weekly assignments will be given to further develop the students' understanding of each class' subject matter as well as to strengthen their ability for technical manipulation. Additionally, students will be assigned to work on a subject of their own choice which will be critiqued in class periodically. Limited spaces: 15 students. Photography II 5-Weeks
This course is an intensive version of our 9-Week Photography II. It was designed for those of you looking to take a step beyond technique and into creativity in a short amount of time. This course does not include a student exhibition. $315. (View Dates)

Photoshop II

This course will focus on photograph editing in Photoshop CS2. $235. (View Dates)

Through weekly presentations and assignments, students will learn to work with Masks, Curves and Photoshop Tools in order to achieve specific, localized image adjustments and fine retouching. The knowledge achieved in this course will provide students with advanced control of difficult images in Raw and Jpeg formats. This course is an excellent complement to the knowledge acquired in Digital Darkroom I. Requirements: 1- Basic understanding of your digital camera's settings and options. 2- Access to Photoshop CS or Photoshop 7. Other versions are accepted but not recommended. 3- Efficiency to operate a computer is a must (Mac or Windows). Student must feel confident browsing around a computer. Note, Each student will be provided with a Mac work station. differences between Mac and Windows will be briefly explained on the first class. If you wish to bring your own laptop (Mac only), you are welcome; however, note that you'll be asked to adjust some of your computer settings for use in class. Portable Flash

This course is a thorough training on using portable flash in various modes from Automatic, through TTL, to Manual. $239. (View Dates)

Students will learn not only the ins and outs of Automatic functions but they will also learn special techniques and troubleshoot necessary to not only improve Flash lighting, but also make more creative lighting set ups. Additionally, this course will cover off-camera flash and set ups of up to 3 units both wired and wirelessly. Class shooting and demonstrations will be made using PhotoManhattan's equipment. Students will be given weekly assignments using their own flash units.

Requirements: 1) Digital or film camera, SLR or point & shoot with manual option. We highly recommend SLRs 2) Portable Flash unit of any kind (other than camera's built in), 3) Knowledge of camera's Manual controls: aperture, shutter speed, and lightmeter.

Note:
If you have an older flash unit, some of the Automatic options explained in class might not be available.

For the first class: bring your film or digital camera and flash unit with fresh batteries. And one B&W 400 ISO film (if film camera), Also, only if time allows you to, bring the specification of your flash's Guide Number (GN), or bring your flash's manual instead (if available) . If none of the above is available, no problem. Guide Numbers are available online under "specs" of any flash model. Charged batteries.

Studio & Lighting

This course is a perfect mixture of basic and intermediate studio & lighting techniques. It is designed to teach students to accurately manipulate lighting in order to get exact results as well as to make creative studio imagery from portraiture to product. (View dates)

Through weekly photo shoots at PhotoManhattan's Studio, students will train on: Studio equipment use, Flash-meter and Lighting ratios, Exposure and Tonality control, Basic Portraiture lighting, Background control, Ambient & strobe light mix, and basic Special effects.

The knowledge achieved in this course is applicable to any kind of photography and a "must" for those of you looking to jump to the next step!. Spaces limited to 8 students.

Studio & Lighting 7-Weeks
Students will work on the presentation of 4 product photos of their own creation which they are welcome to exhibit at PhotoManhattan and at our student photo gallery webpage. $345. (View dates)

Studio & Lighting 3-Weeks
This course is an intensive version of the Studio & Lighting 7-Session Course. The 3 sessions consist of 4 hours of full hands on training instruction. $339. (View Dates)

Studio & Lighting 2-Weeks
This shorter version is designed as a quick and intensive training exclusively on lighting and exposure techniques. $245. (View dates)

This course covers: Professional studio lighting equipment and accessories (strobes, softobox, snoots, umbrellas), Tonality control and Exposure, Basic portraiture lighting: up to 4 lights, Lighting ratios, Flash meters: Incident / reflected reading.
Note, that this course is not as comprehensive as the longer Studio & Lighting courses.

Portraiture

This course explores both the intangibles of art portraiture and the concrete specifics of client-based portraiture. $389. (View Dates)

The work of successful photographers both in candid, formal, and commercial portraiture will be analyzed and harvested for both their technical and aesthetic merits. Course will cover: Introduction to Portraiture styles & history, Portraiture composition, Directing the sitters, Environmental portraiture and Portrait lighting using hot-lights. A sitter will be provided in the final class to practice the methods learned. Limited spaces: 12 students. Note: This is an intermediate level course. Photo Documentary

Learn to develop a Photo documentary project, from the conception of an idea, through the analysis of your subject, to the final layout of a series of photographs. $309. (View dates)

Students will be assigned to document the streets of New York through a 5-week photo project. Each class will consist of an introduction to the work of famous documentary photographers as well as a photo critique of students weekly work. Various documentary techniques will be reviewed and practiced through assignments. Outdoor shooting might take place if students are interested. By the end of this Workshop, students are encouraged to present their best photographs at any of PhotoManhattan's students' exhibitions! Limited spaces: 15 students. Requirement: Any camera, digital or film, point and shoot or SLR. Manual options highly recommended for those of you who want to improve your photo techniques. These intensive short courses are a compilation of intensive sessions.

Intensive basic
This one week intensive course includes material from both our "Introduction to Photography program" and "Digital Photo Darkroom". $499. (Save $15!) (View dates)

Course will cover: Camera settings, Exposure, composition, focus, basic lighting and contrast, Introduction to Photoshop and basic image editing. Students will have 1 hour lunch break between sessions. Requirements: digital or traditional 35mm camera with aperture (..5,6 8 11 16 22..) and shutter speed (..8 15 30 60 125 250 500..) control. For the first class bring your film or digital camera, its batteries, camera's manual (if at hand), one B&W 400 ISO film (if film camera), and good energy! Intensive Intermediate
This course is a mix of Studio, Lighting, Portraiture, Portable Flash, and Wedding Photography. $559. (Save $40!) (View Dates)

Focus will be mainly on Studio set up and Ligthing techniques which will be practiced through class photoshoots and assignments. Requirements: Basic Photography (aperture, shutter speed, & lightmeter usage) Digital or film camera. Camera must have manual option so that aperture and shutter speed can be adjusted. Medium formats are accepted. For first class please bring your camera with fresh batteries, and 100 B&W ISO film (if film camera).
